iMapPESTS have wrapped up our deployment trial for Sentinel 5 at the Tamworth Agricultural Institute. During this trial, we collaborated with researchers at New South Wales Department of Primary Industries to monitor the presence of high priority airborne pests and disease over the transition from Winter to Spring. The following insect and fungal targets were selected for ID and quantification during the trial:

Insect pests targeted

Green peach aphid (Myzus persicae)

Green mirid (Creontiades dilutus)

Melon cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii)

Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia)

Oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi)

Corn aphid (Rhopalosiphum maidis)

Rose-grain aphid (Metopolophium dirhodum)

Fungal pathogens targeted

Tan spot of wheat (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis)

Aschochyta blight of peas (Didymella pinodes/Phoma pinodella)

Net form of net blotch of barley (Pyrenophora teres f. teres)

Spot type net blotch of barley (Pyrenophora teres f. maculata)

Blackleg of canola (Leptosphaeria maculans)

Botrytis grey mould (Botrytis cinerea)

Sclerotinia white rot (Sclerotinia minor &/ S. sclerotiorum)

Septoria tritici blotch (STB) (Zymoseptoria tritici)

Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum)

Chocolate spot of fava bean (Botrytis fabae)

Powdery mildew of grapevines (Erysiphe necator)

Myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii)

iMapPESTS data dashboard by Data Effects

Weather and data for pest and pathogens trapped by the suction traps are shared via the data dashboard (link below).

Weather data is captured and presented in real-time (temperature, relative humidity & rainfall), while pest & pathogen data is uploaded as it becomes available (~2 week lag).

Insect data are presented as the total number of each target insect counted in collected samples from our 2-metre & 6-metre insect suction traps.

Spore data is presented as kilo copies of target DNA per sample from the spore sampler.
