Smart Surveillance Suite

A suite of high-tech surveillance units, known as ‘Sentinels’, are under development to incorporate a number of smart trapping devices for monitoring airborne spores & insects. The suite of Sentinels are equipped with power supply, climate sensors, telemetry & a control panel to remotely monitor & control the units. The units vary in size, power requirements, trap composition, cost and deployment method.

Sentinel 1 is the prototype mobile surveillance unit and requires 2-3 people to deploy with a separate solar array panel.

The dual axle, 2.5 tonne custom-built trailer features four different air samplers:

  • 2 x high volume air samplers collect airborne fungal spores
  • A 2-metre insect suction trap collects insects in the immediate vicinity of the unit, reflecting dynamics in the paddock and on-farm
  • A 6-metre insect suction trap mainly collects large long-distance migratory insects, such as thrips and aphids, as well as some small insects in wind currents
  • BioScout pathogen sampler, under collaboration
